Imminent Escape

Imminent Escape

I feel the heaviness of each brick

Closing out my clear blue sky.

I see numbness in the faces

Of the people passing by.

My soul feels endlessly shackled,

My hands feel tied and bound.

The birds still sing at dawn

But my heart hears not the sound.

Like a weed in concrete, trapped,

I try to push through to the sun

But darkness shrouds my roots,

Stunting each and every one.

Oh Darkness, she’s relentless,

Trying to keep me small,

Stifling my light and voice,

Dragging down my all.

But I have a secret ally,

A partner in sublime.

We ride through dreams together,

Turning sadness into rhyme.

And the rhyming words,

They free us, transforming into art,

As we gallop through imagination

Which soothes and heals the heart.

My horse may now be made of wood

But, growing day by day,

The golden light of our dreams

Is nourishing him like hay.

I feel it flooding through him

As our faerie-tale gathers speed.

We dream in vibrant colour,

I and my trusty steed!

And oh, when he’s filled with life,

How gloriously we’ll ride!

Victoriously wild and free,

Blazing through the light!

A light that travels warm and far,

Golden across fields of green.

The bricks and concrete shall

Fall away, never again to be seen.

Ride on, my trusty muse,

We’ll see the cornfields soon,

And the freedom that awaits us,

Beyond the brightest moon!
